Mentalism Review: “Stop the Press” by Martin Lewis

Here’s a bit of mentalism that employs a classic magic premise, the newspaper prediction. Martin Lewis’ “Stop the Press” allows you to predict the headline of a supermarket tabloid such as the “National Enquirer” or “Globe” after a random selection process and a choice by a spectator. This is an great effect that is easy to learn and perform.

You can watch the video review here.

You bring out your prediction and have it stored in an open location or held by a spectator. Since this mentalism effect relies on heavily influencing the outcome of a seemingly random process, you can use any unveil that you wish. A tabloid page is removed and torn to bits and a spectator deals them one-by-one and freely selects one. Headlines from other pieces are shown to different but at the end, your prediction is correct.

You could perform this in close-up or stand-up/stage situations. There are no angle issues, memorization or calculations and the effect is easy to learn and perform - you only have to learn a relatively simple sequence of tears. It packs small and potentially plays big. I like the interaction of this effect that has an audience member coming up on stage with you.
The kit comes with 12 pages for 12 performances and you provide your own tabloid that holds the gimmicked page you can reuse the tabloid but will destroy one gimmicked page for each performance. The gimmicked page looks right at home in a real tabloid and spectators won't be able to tell the difference. At less than twenty dollars, the cost of the gimmicked perishables is not a big issue. If you like the effect and have a place for it in your show, the reasonable price is well worth it. The trick comes with easy printed instructions.

Ready to add a mentalism-style prediction effect to your show? “Stop the Press” will impress.

Lucky Killer Magic

Occasionally, in the course of performing at a gig, one gets extremely lucky and creates impossible magic. This happened to me last week during one of my restaurant gigs.

The Miracle Card Trick
I was performing at a table and was going into the second phase of a card trick, which required me to force a card. I forced the card, had it returned to the deck and immediately controlled it to the top. Controlling the card wasn’t necessary, but I do this out of habit.

A college kid immediately wanted to shuffle the deck to “make sure.” Since I already knew the card, I handed the deck over to the spectator. As I complimented the spectator on his shuffling technique, I noticed that he didn’t change the position of the top (forced card). When he was done shuffling, he rested the deck on the table.

Improvising during the moment, I was ready for the big revelation.

The Big Moment
I pretended to read the spectator’s mind and came up with the identity of the card - phase one. But now for the big closer. I stated how the spectator had mixed the cards and I hadn’t touched the deck since. And what if he had somehow shuffled the card to the top?

A little more build up, the spectator turns over the top card and discovers that it’s his. Jaws drop and I’ve accomplished the impossible. I pick up my deck and move on.

After performing at a couple of other tables, I walk by and the spectators are still talking about the trick. I guess I’m a wizard (or just extremely lucky - but I won’t let my spectators in on my little secret).

It's a new year and already, one of the best magic TV performances of 2015 has already happened thanks to Dan White after his appearance on "FOX New Year's Eve Countdown 2015."

White's prediction effect is a stunner and it has the added strength of being virtually "Youtube-Proof" to those who want to rewatch and figure out the secret. Well done.

Review of Tommy Wonder's "Two Cup Routine"

On this DVD, Tommy Wonder himself teaches his outstanding two-cup routine with the cups and balls. The video was not recorded for publication but as a private teaching session for Netherlands magician Leo Smetsers.

Bags and Balls
It’s no surprise that the amazing Tommy Wonder has a superbly entertaining cups and balls routine that’s filled with finesse, and there are comic elements with the bag that originally houses the cups and balls. The routine is short and sweet and every move and impeccable segment has been thoroughly and meticulously planned.

The demonstration and tutorial videos are single camera shots. But you can definitely understand what’s going on. Explanations are brief and there are lots of moves.

There are no discussions about the props or even the types of balls used in the routine. Many subtleties go unexplained and you’ll have to work these out yourself. One should already have sleight of hand skills with cups and balls to best learn from this DVD.

Audio is surprisingly good, however, the presentation is in Dutch with English subtitles. For those of us who don’t speak Dutch, it is distracting to try and read the subtitles and concentrate on the action. But hey, if this is the only way to watch the legendary Tommy Wonder, so be it.

True Wonder
It’s a joy to watch Wonder’s handling of the props - he’s so loose and natural. Even if you don’t learn Wonder’s routine, you will probably learn some bits to add to your cups and balls routine.

It’s indeed a pleasure to watch the master, Tommy Wonder, in action. This DVD allows you to appreciate his legendary skill.

Review of the "Run" Deck

It's not very often that I'm excited by a "designer" deck of playing cards.
You know, those special edition cards that are often based on a theme, and cost - depending on where you purchase them - between three to eight times what you normally pay for a deck of cards. Well the "Run" deck of cards has changed my mind.

I'm not sure what the theme is, but the "Run" deck evokes to me a kind of Art Deco feel. With its gold foil and stylish images, the deck is gorgeous. Also, as you would expect, the cards handle and fan well.
Gaffed Monte
The deck also comes with a couple of gaffed cards that allow you perform a Mike Skinner-style three card monte routine. You can learn the routine through an accompanying online video.

The packaging is also worth mentioning. The cards come in a sturdy, horizontal format box that is attractive, fresh, different.

In every way, this deck is for show. I really like the look of these cards.
